'Splendor in the Glaze' exhibit will feature pottery and paintings Friday
      The Art Center for the Islands will host its First Friday reception Friday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. at 323 N. Alister. The October exhibit will feature "Splendor in the Glaze," a group pottery show, and paintings by Susan Adams. Socialize and enjoy live music and refreshments while perusing the art.

Music Fest to benefit scholarships
      The people will have their say at the eighth annual South Texas Music Fest - Chili, Bean and Barbecue Cook-off on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4. The event, to benefit the Jody Mc- Cormick Scholarship Fund, will feature People's Choice awards for the first time in addition to the usual cooking and showmanship awards.

Fall birds keep flying in
      The coming of fall, and the birds just kept on coming. The concept of arrivals, of things coming - is stuck in my mind. The autumnal equinox came on Sept. 22, the start of fall birding trips came on Sept. 27. New birds came every day, and new experiences came along with these things.

Bike to the beach
      Port Aransas streets were filled with cyclists participating in the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce's annual Conquer the Coast bicycle ride on Saturday, September 27. The 65-mile ride included a scenic ride over the Harbor Bridge, then through Portland, Ingleside, Aransas Pass and across the ferries to Port Aransas.

      Get some fresh air and sunshine while helping out the community Saturday, Oct. 4, at the 16th annual Port Aransas Sand and Surf Beach Run, benefiting the Joint Effort Leisure Ministry (JELM). It is sponsored by the Community Presbyterian Church.

New amphitheater at park to be christened with music
      The last in the Sunset Sounds concert series will be the first event to christen the new Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park on Friday, Oct. 10. The concert, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park, will feature Shirley Fischer and the Mixed Nuts.

New poets group to begin monthly writing sessions
      A new poetry group is forming. The Art Center for the Islands and the Laughing Gull Writing Contest hope to begin meetings in October, and meet once a month, if enough interest is expressed. Plans are to have a study, writing and sharing section at each meeting. Janine Van Patten will lead.

      Nancy Clarke enjoys having parties for her friends and neighbors in her landscaped yard on Tarrant Street. When her neighbor, Renee Gamel, read that Port Aransas residents were getting set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Night Out beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, she called the police department to register for the event.

Coast Guard ends search for area man
      The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for Rockport resident Larry Tate. Tate, 34, disappeared in the surf near Beach Marker 61 on Monday, Sept. 22. The U.S. Coast Guard searched until dark that day and continued the next day before ending efforts.

      Gina Stimson was walking her 6- year-old boxer, Dakota, home from a 3-mile trek on the beach on Sunday, Sept. 7. As Stimson and Dakota approached their home on Sea Secret, a neighbor's pit bull terrier slipped its leash and attacked the boxer.

Ike debris keeps volunteers, city busy
      Hurricane Ike gaveth. Clean-up workers tooketh away. City workers and dozens of volunteers combined to remove tons of debris from Port Aransas beaches over the past 10 days. Much of the debris drifted here after being cast into the Gulf of Mexico by Hurricane Ike, which ripped through the Galveston area on Sept. 13.

Tarpon Inn trees removed to make way for changes
      The eight cottonwood trees that former Tarpon Inn owner James Atwill planted in 1981 were removed last week at the order of the inn's new proprietor. Lee Roy Hoskins, a businessman from George West, hired the High Point Tree Service Co.
