Lady Marlins take sixth
The Port Aransas High School Lady Marlin varsity girls took sixth place overall at a cross-country meet Saturday, Sept. 20, in San Antonio.
The course was at Brooks Air Force Base. It's the course where island runners will compete if they make it to the regional meet, and it allowed them to see where they stood against the eight other 1A schools in their division.
Although the warm afternoon conditions were partly responsible for the students' times, it's still clear that the runners have a lot of work to do in order to try for a top-three spot at the regional meet, according to crosscountry coach Steve Reaves.
Three freshmen ran for the Marlin varsity team.
"They ran a good race and continue to improve each week, and will grow stronger through more experience," Reaves said.
"I am very proud of the improvements they have already made this year," he said. Approximately 80 athletes competed in each race. Individual results were: Varsity Girls Rebecca Armanovs, 13:19, 5th Kelsey Abel, 15:28, 35th Kelsey Ortiz, 15:54, 39th Sarah Armanovs, 15:56, 41st Judy Wright, 16:00, 42nd Marina Milligan, 16:27, 49th Chelsea Perez, 18:02, 63rd Rachael Phillips, 18:12, 64th Varsity Boys Chris Eggleston, 22:57, 49th Matt Fries, 23:42, 57th Eli Bennett, 23:59, 60th
