Atkinson benefit postponed
      Friends and family of J.B. Atkinson of Port Aransas have organized a benefit dinner and auction to help him with medical expenses. It was scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Coast Club, 1023 State Hwy. 361, Suite A. Due to potential weather conditions, it has been tentatively rescheduled for the following Saturday, Sept. 20.

Swimming pool maintenance to affect schedules
      Seasonal maintenance at the Port Aransas Community Park Swimming Pool will continue through Friday, Sept. 19. The pool will remain open, but on a limited schedule on weekdays. The pool is usually closed on Mondays and will open Tuesday through Friday for lap swimming from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., both weeks.

Art Center to host turtle 'hatching'
ARK to benefit
      The Art Center for the Islands is the September host for one of a series of "hatchings" of painted or decorated cast aluminum turtles. The September "hatching," part of the Turtle Trail 2008, is open to the public and will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the art center, 323 N. Alister St.

Thanking the troops
      A group from Shapes for Women in Port Aransas made it their summer project to raise funds for care packages to be sent to troops overseas. They raised $2,400 and shipped 27 care packages, containing various toiletries, magazines, I-tunes gift cards, cool ties and snacks.

Chris Acosta returning from European service
      Captain John C. (Chris) Acosta, a 1998 Port Aransas High School graduate, will return to the U.S. with his wife Megan, after being stationed in Germany for the past four years. Acosta served a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005 before reporting to U.S. Army Headquarters in Heidelberg to serve as the Information Management Division Deputy Chief of Operations.

Art center offers workshops
      The Art Center for the Islands is offering a variety of workshops for the fall. Pre-registration and prepayment are required for some classes, and supply lists are available at the front desk at the art center. A workshop in hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery with Bill Hildebrand will be held Sept. 15 through Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Inbound for cargo
      The roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel Freedom, out of Wilmington, Del., steams through Port Aransas en route to the Port of Corpus Christi just ahead of Hurricane Ike. The Freedom, operated by American Roll-On, Roll-Off Carrier (ARC), is one of the U.S. Maritime Administration's cargo vessels used to move military equipment and supplies around the world.

      A new Tuesday night poetry group is forming. The Art Center for the Islands and the Laughing Gull Writing Contest are joining forces to generate the group, which they would like to see begin in September, if enough interest is expressed.

Bujan skeptical but hopeful after Charter Cable promises
      Declaring he is "not expecting a lot, but hoping for a lot," City Councilman Charles Bujan said he is encouraged after an appearance by a Charter Communications representative at the Thursday, Aug. 21, council meeting. Bujan had sought Charter Cable responses to a stack of complaints he said he received by Port Aransas residents unhappy with the cable company's service.

Seven years ago, terrorists struck the the World Trade Center in New York City. The attacks left impacts on Port Aransans and island institutions.
      Shade Vaughn, who grew up in Port Aransas, was living in New York City when terrorists crashed two airliners into the twin towers of the World Trade Center seven years ago today - on Sept. 11, 2001.

Quick response
      Randy Clay was sitting on his balcony at Cline's Landing just after noon on Thursday, Sept. 4, when he saw the rig supply vessel Sea Spirit make a quick turn between the jetties. Clay got his camera and got this photo of the Sea Spirit crew recovering a man who had apparently fallen overboard as the vessel was outbound between the jetties.

      A Corpus Christi man is in Nueces County jail on multiple charges after an early morning chase Wednesday, Sept. 3. Of particular interest to Precinct 4 Constable Bobby Sherwood, is a list of Port Aransas telephone numbers the man had with him. Those numbers could lead to arrests on drugrelated charges, Sherwood said.

Scratches lead to boy's arrest for burglary
      Port Aransas police say they've solved at least one burglary with the charging of a juvenile boy. Executive Lt. Darryl Johnson said police Sgt. Terry Syler was patrolling near Glendale and Station streets at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, when he saw two boys running south on Station Street.

      A Port Aransas man is in Nueces County Jail on two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one charge of possession of dangerous drugs and on a charge of evading arrest after an early morning chase Monday, Sept. 8. Constable Bobby Sherwood said Deputy Kevin Quesada spotted John Henry Studeman, 35, riding a bicycle on Avenue A at 2:50 a.m. Monday.

Be on the lookout for banded red knots; safe passage wished for all
      Once one of the most abundant of shorebirds, the handsome red knot has declined in population from 120,000 to 30,000 in 10 years. Here on Mustang Island on the Gulf beach between Access Roads 1 and 2, I have counted 143,352 red knots in the past 30 years.
