Johnson tapped as temporary chief at PAISD
Johnson is the former superintendent of the Aransas County Independent School District, which includes Rockport and Fulton.
Meeting on Thursday, Aug. 21, trustees voted 6-0 to offer the job to Johnson. Trustee Ken Dunton, a research scientist, was absent, visiting Alaska on a research expedition.
Trustees earlier narrowed their search for an interim superintendent to two candidates: Johnson and Harold "Skipper" Lister, who retired from PAISD in 2004 after 26 years working in the district. Lister's roles included serving as principal of each of the district's three campuses and twice as interim superintendent.
Johnson was employed for 18 years at ACISD. He held positions including middle school and high school assistant principal, high school principal and assistant superintendent. He served as superintendent for seven years until retiring in June.
Trustees interviewed Johnson and Lister in closed session, then voted in open session to offer the job to Johnson.
Johnson accepted the trustees' offer and will be paid $400 a day. He will be acting in place of Billy Wiggins, who has resigned as superintendent of PAISD to take the job of superintendent of the Salado Independent School District, about 40 miles north of Austin.
Johnson's first official day on the job will be on Monday, Aug. 25 - the first day of school. But he spent Friday visiting PAISD's three campuses and getting familiar with facilities and staff.
"I'm extremely impressed with the quality of the teaching staff and administrators," said Johnson, who lives in Port Aransas. "They're very professional. They've left an awesome impression on me as interim superintendent."
Trustees have hired a Houstonbased firm to search for a permanent superintendent. The firm, Texas School Solutions, is headed by Carol Moffett, former superintendent of the Flour Bluff Independent School District.
