Sunset Sounds will feature bluegrass band
The Sunset Sounds free summer concert series continues tomorrow night, Friday, July 11. The concert, from 7-9 p.m. at the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park, will feature Johnson Grass, an American bluegrass band.
The band began as a looseknit open jam at the Whalebone Bar in Corpus Christi. Within a few months, the four original members, Jim Haley, Ken Jackson, Darrell Perkins and Daniel Brodhag, were playing as the house band every Sunday night.
They play a wide assortment and styles of music, everything from grassroots Americana, bluegrass, gospel and originals to some acoustic twists to blues numbers and popular standards.
The four founding members have been playing together for six years. About a year ago, Jamie Smith became a full-timer.
"If you want to hear raw garage acoustic Americana, this is the band for you," said Pam Greene, community programs coordinator for parks and recreation.
This free concert series, held on the second Friday of each month through October, is courtesy of the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department.
Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, picnics and coolers.
