Powder Puff fishing tourney gearing up

The ladies are gearing up to fish. The 25th annual Powder Puff Fishing Tournament will be Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21.

The women-only tournament has two divisions. In the professional division, more serious anglers fish with a guide. The amateur division is more informal, with no professional guides.

Each angler paying the $75 entry fee will receive a Powder Puff Tshirt. Folks can register in person at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Roberts Point Park Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion. Late registration will be the following morning at Woody's, until 6:30 a.m.

Fishing will begin at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Deadline for weighing in will be at 3 p.m. Anglers must be inside the pavilion and in line, with their fish, at that time.

An awards presentation will be after the weigh-in. Trophies will be awarded for the overall winner and winners in the individual species categories of redfish, flounder, drum, hardhead, gafftop, sheepshead and speckled trout.

A trophy also will be awarded for best hard-luck story. The stories will be told at the pavilion after weigh-in.

According to tournament rules, all women on the boats must be registered contestants.

The rules also require that women cast, hook and retrieve their own fish. "Men may run the boat, bait hooks, net fish and serve drinks, but the ladies do the rest," according to the written rules.

Whether fishing in the professional or amateur division, women may fish in teams of one to four people. The team with the heaviest stringer of three eligible species will be the division winner. Ties will be broken by measuring the lengths of the three species.

Anglers may put together their heaviest three species for a stringer to be submitted for weigh-in and a chance at becoming the overall winner.

Other tournament rules and information are on the Woody's Sports Center Web site, www.woodysonline. com or at 749-5252.
