Hurst was born September 3, 1927, in Caldwell, Kan., to Fahy and Mina Hurst. He graduated from Kansas State University after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked as a purchasing agent for Boeing, where he met his wife Betty.
He was a hunter, fisherman and served as president of the Kansas Arabian Horse Society.
The Hursts moved to Port Aransas in the spring of 2007, after wintering here for years.
He is survived by his wife Betty Lou Hurst of Port Aransas; his son, William F. Hurst III, of Goddard, Kan.; daughters Julie Kay Wade (Jim) of Austin and Susan Gail Stubbs (Robert) of Austin and grandchildren.
A viewing is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, from noon to 8 p.m. at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, Kan. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 5, at 10 a.m. at the Goddard United Methodist Church, Goddard, Kan.
Memorials have been established with Kansas State University Gardens and United Methodist Church Urban Ministries.
