Mayor, trustee candidates to face-off
SOUTH JETTY Candidates' Night is tonight, Thursday, April 24, and early voting starts on Monday, April 28.
The voter education forum sponsored by the South Jetty for candidates in contested races, Candidates' Night, will be held in the council chambers at city hall. It will be broadcast on local cable access channel 20.
The forum will feature candidates for mayor, incumbent Claude Brown and challenger Charlie Zahn, as well as candidates for Place 2 on the Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees, Michael Garlough and Chuck Borders.
Candidates' Night will not feature the other contested school board race between incumbent Place 3 trustee Lorraine Stern and Jay Jones because Jones did not confirm his attendance by the deadline.
Stern did confirm her attendance and will be allowed a five-minute presentation.
THE GAME PLAN
Candidates in the contested races are asked to be at city hall no later than 5:25 p.m. They will draw questions promptly at 5:30 p.m. and will then have 30 minutes to formulate threeminute responses to the questions they draw. Candidates will be allowed two minutes to make impromptu responses to their opponents' prepared responses.
Candidates will be allowed five minutes to make an opening statement prior to the questioning, and five minutes to make a closing statement following the questioning.
Candidates' Night will begin with Stern's presentation at 6 p.m. followed by the candidates for mayor, then Place 2 trustee.
EARLY VOTING Early voting will start Monday and continue through Tuesday, May 6. Election Day is Satur- day, May 10. Requests for mailed ballots will be received through May 2 and must be returned by May 6.
The Community Center, 408 N. Alister, is expected to be far enough along in renovations to host early voting. Voting hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 4. Hours on May 5 and 6 will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
THE REST OF THE STORY
Candidates unopposed in their bids for city council are Place 2 incumbent Keith McMullin, Glenda Ballentine for Place 4 (being vacated by Bubba Jensen because of term limitations) and Place 6 incumbent Mike Hall.
Place 2 school board trustee Dr. Ken Dunton is unopposed for the remaining two years of Garlough's Place 4 position.
Garlough earlier this year was appointed to fill Place 4 until the May election. It was left vacant by the resignation of Bob Smith.
With only incumbents filing for three positions on the Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 4, no election will be held, in accordance with state law.
Terms are for four years. Incumbents are Russ Miget, Ed Reed and Suzette Freeman.
