Chili cook-off Saturday to benefit peace officers
The third annual Coastal Bend Law Enforcement Chili Cook-off will be held this Saturday at Roberts Point Park. The event is sponsored by the Coastal Bend Peace Officers Association (CBPOA).
The public is invited to taste awardwinning chili from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Live music will be provided.
The cook-off, begun in 2006, is a joint effort by area law enforcement and military personnel, and provides assistance for medical expenses not covered by insurance in case of debilitating disease or death.
All proceeds will benefit Coastal Bend Law Enforcement and Military Families in Need, Port Aransas Project Graduation and the CBPOA Scholarship Fund.
Past recipients of assistance have included the families of James Saavedra, a Port of Corpus Christi Police officer, and Matthew Thebeau, a Corpus Christi Police officer. Both men died in the line of duty. Funds have also helped the Women's Shelter of South Texas and a Martin Middle School mentoring program.
