All-star basketball to be hosted Saturday
Top-flight high school basketball players from all over South Texas will play in a series of all-star games at Port Aransas High School on Saturday, April 5, to benefit Project Graduation.
The games will feature some of the best senior players from boys' and girls' teams from PAHS and from cities including Falls City, George West, Refugio and Three Rivers.
Five games involving three boys' teams and two girls' teams will be held throughout the day.
This is the eighth year that James Ashley of Port Aransas has selected the players and organized the event, which Ashley said officially is called the "South Texas 3A, 2A and 1A All- Star Basketball Games."
With so much talent on the court, the games could be pretty exciting, Ashley said. Some teams have scored 100 points in the past.
"It's the best players from South Texas," Ashley said. "It'll be pretty much a wide-open game. A lot of fast breaks, especially on the boys' side."
Boys' games will be at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Girls' games will be at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Preliminaries for a three-point shooting contest will be held at noon. The finals will be at 3:30 p.m.
PAHS seniors expected to play include Kathy Ashley, Lia Phillips, Sarah Pate, Elaine Franco, Matt White, Zack Merrill, Cody Collins, Drake Sawyer, Dusty Foley and Charley Walker.
Admission is $5. The event in the past has raised $1,000 to $2,000 for Project Graduation, Ashley said.
Project Graduation needs funding to provide an alcohol- and drug-free lock-in party on graduation night for juniors, seniors and their guests.
