FISHING REPORT

Vacationers join ranks of islanders still fishing

Spring Break started with some families and groups of fishermen taking the time off to fish. Dockworkers report good catches both inshore and offshore as wind allows.

Vermilion snapper, barracuda, kingfish and shark were caught by anglers out of Deep Sea Headquarters last week, Bethany Holden said. Dorado and amberjack also were caught, and 7-10 pound red snapper limits were caught in state water.

Limits of kingfish and shark were the big catches on the Adventurer out of Offshore Adventures. Bay guides led customers to limits of black drum and sheepshead using shrimp and mullet, reported Peggy Sexton.

Limits of big sheepshead, 5-6 pounders, were caught on the south jetty, according to Sharon Keehlisen out of Woody's Sports Center. Pier anglers reeled in gafftop and sheepshead. Bay guides caught limits of redfish, black drum and sheepshead. Those fishing on the Island Queen caught whiting, sand trout and sheepshead. Offshore fishermen caught limits of kingfish, limits of red snapper and a few wahoo.

Limits of king mackerel were caught along with vermilion snapper and shark, John McNatt of Fisherman's Wharf said. Anglers using the Jetty Boat to fish the north jetty caught sheepshead and redfish.
