FISHING REPORT

More, bigger fish caught last week

Reports indicate fish catching is improving vastly over the past several weeks.

A state water fishing trip aboard the Adventurer out of Offshore Adventures produced eight big bull reds and limits of red snapper for everyone. Grouper, triggerfish and strawberry grouper also were caught, Peggy Sexton reported. Black drum and red drum were caught in the bays, with anglers using mullet and shrimp to lure the reds and sea lice luring black drum.

Black drum and whiting are being caught in the surf, Sandra Fudge of Woody's Sports Center said. Redfish are being caught in the bays and black drum off Roberts Point Park. Sheepshead are being caught off the bulkhead in Charlie's Pasture. Offshore, red snapper in state waters, wahoo, kingfish and tuna are being caught.

Red snapper limits in state water and 70 kingfish on one trip were caught on cat boats out of Fisherman's Wharf, according to John McNatt. Dog snapper, lane snapper and vermilion snapper also were caught offshore. North jetty fishermen using the Jetty Boat caught redfish and sheepshead.

A 114-pound blacktip shark headlined at Dolphin Dock last week, said Mike Lockhart. Additionally, kingfish, shark, amberjack, yellowfin tuna, vermilion snapper and grouper were reeled in. Lots of mako shark have hooked up, and a few have made it to the boat.

Dan Hurd of Deep Sea Headquarters reported fishing has been excellent for boats out of this dock. Limits of kingfish were caught on 8-hour trips along with Atlantic sharpnose shark. Also on the short trips, other big sharks have been snagged. Amberjack, grouper, large amberjack, barracuda and yellowfin tuna in the 65 to 80-pound range were caught. Redfish and black drum were caught in the bays.
