Deadline set for PAEF grant applications


Teachers and other employees at Port Aransas schools have until Feb. 29 to apply for the next round of grants from the Port Aransas Education Foundation.

The non-profit foundation's mission is to raise money to award grants for programs and items not funded in school budgets.

Established in 2006, the foundation awarded more than $21,000 in grants to the Port Aransas Independent School District during the 2006-07 school year. The grants helped pay for a wide variety of things, including:

• A trip for a few dozen elementary school students to see a symphony orchestra performance in Corpus Christi;

• Electronic equipment that allows PowerPoint presentations in a high school class to become interactive with students;

• Tuition for a teacher to attend a course that explained a process for evaluating the problems of students who struggle with learning.

This year, the foundation is set to award even more due to a successful fundraising season.

"We're anticipating being able to award up to about $40,000 this year," said Janice Roberts, president of the foundation.

The foundation has distributed grant applications at Port Aransas schools. Employees can get more applications by contacting Jana Snow, secretary of the foundation, at janasnow@wesellporta.com or (361) 438-1380.

The foundation's board will review applications and make decisions on which grant requests will be granted. Roberts said she expects grants to be awarded in early April.

The foundation recently added some new board members: Kim Fon, Julie Shodrok, Jay Kenigsberg and Mardee Christensen. They join continuing board members Roberts, Snow, Vanessa Brundrett, Wendy Moore, Addie Belcher, Jay Jones, Rob Clark, Greg Villansana, Mike Hall, Beth Owens and Michelle Sowers.
