The Port Aransas High School Lady Marlins can head into the district playoffs with a measure of confidence after pounding the Pettus Lady Eagles into submission on Friday, Feb. 1.

The Lady Marlins ended the season with a district record of 7-1, tying the Falls City Beaverettes for first place in District 31-A. Lady Marlins Coach Randy Henderson and the Falls City coach, Richard Coronado, broke the tie through a random number selection similar to a coin-flip.

Port Aransas won the flip and got first place in district. Both the Lady Marlins and Beaverettes will go into the play-offs but will take different paths in the post-season.

At press time on Wednesday, Feb. 6, PAHS was awaiting the outcomes of games among other teams that would determine who the Lady Marlins' first opponent would be in the play-offs.

In the Feb. 1 Pettus game, the Lady Marlins buried the Lady Eagles quickly in the first four minutes of the game.

CCA, which fielded only five players, was outmatched even though Port Aransas coaches allowed JV players like Ortiz to play in the varsity game.
"Our starting five blistered Pettus with the first 21 points of the game," Henderson said. "Then our bench came in and sealed the deal."

The Lady Marlins led 29-4 after the first quarter.

"To Pettus' credit, they never quit and made a couple of runs on us," Henderson said.

But the Lady Eagles never really came close to evening things up. The final score was 71-43.

The Lady Marlins guards led the way in trouncing Pettus, with Lia Phillips and Elaine Franco combining for 12 assists and 12 steals.

Together, Kathy Ashley, Sarah Pate and Phillips made 10 of 21 three-point attempts.

"Emily Scott and Rebecca Armanovs came in and wreaked havoc on Pettus' ability to run their offense," Henderson said.

Katelin Dupnik was on her way to another solid game but hit her head on the court after a hard foul in the second quarter. Henderson pulled her from the game as a precaution, but he later said she was fine and expected to play in the team's next game.
