Patterson backs off on park deal
      While the remaining presidential candidates were flying around the country at a breakneck pace, trying to shore up or add to their support in two dozen states on Super Tuesday, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson was backing off a limb. Sort of.

Financing the highway system
      Leah and I did some honest number crunching and soul searching this weekend and it made me think of the Texas Department of Transportation and, well, government in general. We bought a house less than two years ago. It's a small, frame home.

Polling is starting to cast a pall
      Unlike most of America, which is tuned in to the latest on Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Mary Kate and Ashley and the like, I'm following the presidential primaries closely. The emphasis seems to be on "the polls". There are poll-polls and there are exit polls. Exit polls are those taken when people conducting polls interview voters as they leave the voting places.

Now presenting ... alternative Oscars
      Some time there should be an Academy Award for the actor or actress who walks across the stage, is handed the well-known Oscar award, and responds with,"Thanks." And then cuts. How about an Oscar for the person who has not missed a movie in a year's time, but still fed his dog or cat, and even frequently his family.

      What about us? We come to Port Aransas for the months of January and February each year. We live out of state and guess that makes us Winter Texans, right? I see that in your paper if we come from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska or Michigan, we could join others for a friendly cup of coffee.
