Mardi Gras Carnival is Saturday
Proceeds earmarked for PAHS vocational education scholarship
      The Mardi Gras celebration in Port Aransas will continue on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a carnival. The event is sponsored by the Port Aransas Leisure Society (PALS). The Mardi Gras carnival will be on the grounds of Sharkey's, 2600 State Hwy. 361.

      The annual Mardi Gras Parade heads down Beach Street on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 5. More than 1,000 folks turned out to take part in and watch the parade, which was followed by a carnival. The events were sponsored by the Port Aransas Leisure Society.

Chopper lifting power helps electrical project

      A multi-million-dollar construction project on Mustang Island is using helicopters for some eye-catching work on power poles. Choppers are helping workers remove old wooden power poles and replace them with bigger concrete poles more powerful transmission lines along a stretch of the island nearly seven miles long, according to AEP Texas, the electrical utility.

      Due to weather, the sandcastlebuilding event has been changed to Friday, Feb. 15. This is another chance to learn how to build sandcastles on the beach. From 10 a.m. to noon, Capt. Steve Zarych will give a short but in-depth lesson on how to create sandcastles.

      A Corpus Christi man is out of jail on bond after being charged with making terroristic threats by phone to Port Aransas City Councilman Keith Donley. Police arrested David Misell, 28, on Jan. 25. He is out of jail on $20,000 bond, said Port Aransas police Lt. Darryl Johnson.

      I had watched the little bird all winter long. It was a spotted sandpiper, one of the small brownish sandpipers that often give beginning bird watchers a hard time in telling them apart.
