The game was part of the JV Marlin Classic, held Jan. 12. After muzzling the Taft Lady Greyhounds, the Port Aransas High School Lady Marlins JV fell victim to a mauling by the West Oso Lady Bears.

The Lady Marlins beat the Greyhounds, 41-28; then lost to the Lady Bears, 26-60, in the JV Marlin Classic tournament Saturday, Jan. 12.

In the Taft game, Lady Marlins JV coach Karen Hall didn't hesitate to use her freshman players.

"I played with freshmen and was able to let them have a lot of time on the floor," Hall said. "We scored 18 points in the first quarter and coasted the rest of the game.

"The girls played well and were very motivated to win the game," Hall said.

Scoring were Savanna Nixon, with 12 points; Abby Kenigsberg, 6; Alex Boenisch, 5; Jordan Butterfield, 2; Katie Voyles, 3; Kelsey Ortiz, 3; Shelbi Foley, 1; and Chelsea Perez, 9.

The West Oso team "was probably the most athletic and quick that I have ever seen," said Hall, who has been coaching high school basketball for five years.

The Lady Marlins JV players "hustled the whole game and never let up," Hall said. "We just couldn't do much against this team."

Scoring for the Lady Marlins JV were Nixon, 1; Boenisch, 1; Butterfield, 3; Perez, 4; Tarryn Murray, 16; Ortiz, 1.

After the tournament, the Lady Marlins JV had an overall record of 9-8 and a district record of 0-1.
