Lady Marlins beat Centurions
Lady Marlins scored 68 points, but their coach said they had a bad night of shooting.
That will tell you something about the potential of this year's Lady Marlins.
The Port Aransas girls beat John Paul II High School, 68-42, on Friday, Jan. 4, at Port Aransas High School. "The girls battled through a very poor shooting night," said Randy Henderson, coach of the Lady Marlins. "Our pressure defenses wore John Paul down, and we capitalized with some easy baskets."
The Lady Marlins sank 58 percent of their two-point attempts, 15 percent of their three-point tries and 32 percent of their free throws.
Henderson said he was glad the bad shooting happened in a nondistrict game.
"With district beginning Tuesday (Jan. 8) in Woodsboro, we cannot have one of these nights again," Henderson said in remarks two days before the Woodsboro game, which the Lady Marlins won,
Henderson did see some bright spots in the John Paul game. Katelin Dupnik was "very aggressive in taking the ball to the basket," he said. And every player on the Lady Marlins roster had at least two rebounds.
The game against John Paul was "Throwback Night," when spectators at Doyle Marek Gym were invited to dress in retro fashions from various past decades.
"I would like to thank all those that participated in Throwback Night," Henderson said. "I think it was a success."
