Goathead Tourney ushers in new year
Bundled up David Sikes, foreground, and Nick Lorette huddle with their backs to the wind on the north jetty during this year's Goathead Tournament. Tuesday, Jan. 1, dawned chilly and windy. Did that faze the dedicated anglers who fish the Goathead Tournament each year?
Well, yes, it did. But they went fishing anyway.
The twelfth annual tournament concluded at 1:15 p.m. with Mitchell Collins of Port Aransas taking home the $261 pot. Collins' sheepshead was the only one weighed in. Anglers who fished the north jetty did poorly and a group aboard the Island Queen II who went to the Fina docks got skunked. Collins was fishing from his own boat at the Fina docks and brought in the only sheepshead to be weighed in.
While this year's tournament was the twelfth annual, tourney organizers concede that the competition was canceled in either 2001 or 2002, and that David Bell probably won whichever year it wasn't canceled.
That's what you can expect from a tournament whose rules say, in part, "Due to heavy workload and the age and physical condition of the weighmaster, please only one fish per person" and "Any complaints, comments, hand signs, moans, sighs ... will positively absolutely disqualify you, your family and grand children and any one you speak with for life."
Coulda been a contender James Lemley holds up a sheepshead he caught but didn't weigh in. Wife Betty fishes in the background on the north jetty. It was a fun tournament, anyway. Nobody knows how many anglers competed.
