Memorial service held for former councilman Corder

Former city councilman John Tennison Corder, 63, died at his home on Sunday, Nov. 4.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Richard Safford officiating.

Corder, a former member of the Port Aransas City Council, the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Rotary Club, was born Oct. 19, 1944 in San Antonio. He grew up in Robstown where he was an Eagle Scout. He earned his degree from the School of Pharmacy at The University of Texas and was an avid Longhorn fan. A certified pharmacist, he moved to Port Aransas in 1986 where he owned and operated the Island Pharmacy until 1992.

In addition to serving on the Port Aransas City Council, Corder was a member of the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority board of directors and the Nueces County Park Board. A member of the Port Aransas Rotary Club, he held each level of office in the Rotary Club and was chairman of the Port Aransas Days festival for which he initiated the Weiner Dog Races. A member of the Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tourist Bureau, he served as a board member and president.

His parents, Bill and Audrey Corder, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Corder of Port Aransas; his son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Daphne Corder of Austin; his stepson, John Colborn of Austin; brother and sisterin law, Dave and Janet Corder of Southlake; his twin brother, Mike and wife Joy Corder of Lexington; his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Mike Valiquette of Girdwood, Alaska; two granddaughters, Lauren and Jennifer Corder of Austin; five nieces, three nephews and his lifelong friends, Johnny and Claudia Secrest of Corpus Christi.
