KPAB free trash disposal is Saturday at IGA

Residents of Port Aransas are getting a chance to dispose of stuff cluttering their property for free Saturday, Oct. 20, at the annual "Dunk Your Junk" event.

Clean up, clear out and give away unwanted stuff from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 20. The event is a joint venture between Keep Port Aransas Beautiful (KPAB), Allied Waste-BFI, the City of Port Aransas, Family Center IGA and Trailer Trash that have joined to beautify the town, said event chairman Eliza Large.

Four dumpsters will be placed at the Family Center IGA, 418 S. Alister St. Allied Waste-BFIhas donated the containers at not cost.

Residents are urged take advantage of the free disposal to spruce up and to rid refuse from yards, houses and garages. Bulky items, such as furniture, will be accepted. No hazardous waste, chemicals or commercial construction materials will be taken.

KPAB will recycle items and materials that can be reused for personal recycling, and people are welcome to browse and take what they can use. KPAB provides this service as alternative to filling up landfills. People bring items that are still usable but unwanted, and others take them home.

Metal will be accepted and recycled by Jim Lotspeich of Trailer Trash. Mayor Claude Brown has offered to use his backhoe to compact contents in dumpsters, making room for more junk, said Large. KPAB members will direct traffic, separate items for personal recycling and clean up after the event.

Boy Scouts from Port Aransas Troop 29 will do limited pick up from residences. Call Rachael King at the Parks and Recreation Department at 749-4158 to be listed for pick up. Anyone having a truck or is willing to help pick up the junk from homes may volunteer by calling KPAB chairman Carol Woodfin at 749-3648, or King.

KPAB has held this event for many years in October to celebrate national Make A Difference Day (the last Saturday in October) as its way of making a difference in the look and health of Port Aransas.

Volunteers always are needed for KPAB activities, and people new to town are encouraged to help, said Woodfin.

Donations for the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization are accepted and are tax deductible.
