Kiwanis Club had fun for kids at tournament
$2,000 RAISED FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

STAFF PHOTO BY PHIL REYNOLDS Proud angler Logan Plemons, 6, was proud enough of the hammerhead shark he caught during the Capt. Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament on Saturday that he carried it all over the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion, showing it off.
Four Port Aransas High School seniors will benefit from scholarships with funds raised at this year's Hope Devlin Fishing Tournament, said Elvia Tamayo, who ran this year's 11th annual tourney.

A totals of 66 youngsters entered the tournament, held Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Fred Rhodes Memorial Pavilion in Roberts Point Park. Sponsoring Port Aransas Kiwanians handed out 54 prizes, Tamayo said.

Hayden Jones won the 1-5-year-old part of the tournament; Dylan Hines was the 6-10-year-old champion; and Justin Kahn took home first place in the 11-16-year-old division. Each won a new bicycle.

Evan and Ryan Kinnebrew won tricycles on the strength of their smallest fish brought in during the tournament.

Besides the pedal prizes, donors also came up with boogie boards, skim boards, fishing tackle, bicycle helmets and inflatable dolphins for participants.

In all, $2,000 was raised during the tournament, Tamayo said.

The contest is named for the late Capt. Hope Devlin, a longtime Port Aransas charter boat captain who was also instrumental in starting the Port Aransas Kiwanis Club and who loved fishing.
