Summer season equals great fish being caught

Summer fishing continues to be great, and a wide variety of good catches has been reported.

Offshore catches weighed in at

Fisherman's Wharf this week include a 57-pound Warsaw grouper and a 397-pound blue marlin, John McNatt reported. The marlin was to be released, but did not survive. "We're killing on kingfish," McNatt said. Red and vermilion snapper, and kingfish limits were caught. Anglers who used the Jetty Boat to go to the north jetty racked up speckled trout limits.

Anglers are reeling in lots of fish on boats out of Dolphin Dock according to Sandy Martin. A 30-pound kingfish, pompano, grouper, a stingray, shark, grouper, ling, tuna, red snapper and barracuda were caught.

Bethany Holden of Deep Sea Headquarters said its catches included a 90-pound shark, a 47-pound kingfish, a 35-pound ling, a 21-pound snapper and a 20-pound dolphin. Kingfish, large dorado, Atlantic sharpnose shark, blacktip shark, spinner shark, jack crevalle and vermilion and red snapper were caught.

A couple of blacktip sharks measuring more than four feet were caught this week, reported Luci Krause of the Pier House on Horace Caldwell Pier. Spanish mackerel and speckled trout were caught with more catches during early morning and late evening. For bait, the fishermen used mullet, shrimp and croaker.

A possible state record scamp grouper was brought in on a private charter out of Offshore Adventures, Beverly Stapleton said. Limits of red snapper, limits of vermillion snapper, Atlantic sharpnose shark and kingfish, jack crevalle, lane snapper, triggerfish, barracuda, bluefish, African pompano, ling and mahi-mahi also were caught. Bay fishermen brought in limits of trout and some redfish using live shrimp, croaker, and piggy perch.

Anglers on the Island Queen caught bull reds, shark, a few kings, sand trout, whiting and Spanish mackerel, said Sandra Fudge of Woody's Sports Center. Shark, trout and redfish were caught in the surf and limits of specks and redfish in the bays. Offshore, kingfish, shark, snapper, dolphin, ling and Spanish mackerel were caught.
