New video: Aye, mateys! Ladies take to the sea - click here to watch Council reappoints P&Z incumbents With little discussion, city council members on Thursday, July 19, unanimously reappointed four incumbent members and the incumbent alternate to their expiring positions on the Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission has seven members plus the alternate. This year, four of the members' terms expire, as does the alternate's. Members are appointed for staggered two-year terms. Reappointed were Becky Corder, who is the current chairman, and members Linda Zahn, Bruce Clark and Betsy Churgai. Glenda Balentine was reappointed alternate board member. Two other residents, Jay Jones and Wendy Moore, submitted applications for the commission. Councilman Keith McMullin said he was happy to see new names on applications, since he believes there is merit in "getting new people to throw their hats in the ring." He voted for incumbents, however, because he thinks "there's also merit in keeping experienced people as we get to the end of putting together the land use plan." The city's land use plan is a major and critical element of the comprehensive plan, which also is nearing the end of its construction. Mayor Claude Brown echoed McMullin's statement, and Councilman Mike Hall added, "I encourage you to apply again." |
