City's Parks, Recreation Department schedules entire summer full of fun Entertain your child all summer in Port Aransas with activities conducted by the Parks and Recreation Department. All are available for residents and visitors. Pre-register for daily or weekly sessions of two-hour activities including arts and crafts, science, sports and more online at http://cityofportaransas.org/ SummerPrograms.cfm. Catamaran Cruise Enjoy sailing aboard the S/V Isla with Capt. Tom Doran. Make it a family activity, or youths 10 years and older may take the three-hour tour. Set sail Tuesdays, June 12, and/or June 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Meet at Woody's Sport Center, 136 W. Cotter Ave. Bring a sack lunch. Spaces are limited. The cost is $5 a person per session. Chill Out Time Come inside and beat the heat with arts and crafts activities for kids five and older. Parents are invited at no charge. The cost is $2 for the first child; $1 for each additional child from the same family. All classes meet in the Girl Scout hut, 739 W. Ave. A. Craft classes are limited to the first 25 children to register. Attendees will make space tshirts Tuesday, June 19; living necklaces on Wednesday, June 20; and super decoder discs on Thursday, June 21. Future projects are pasta pets, paper twins, sheetrock art, fairy wings, paint magic and hats galore. Mad Scientist Workshops Three distinct workshops teach the science of fun through wacky experiments and handson activities. Mondays, June 18 and July 30, and Thursday, July 12. The cost is $2 for kids five and older. Liquids - Monday, June 18; basic physics - Thursday, July 12, and electricity - Monday, July 30, are scheduled. Come Sail Advanced Students will practice openwater sailing skills in the city harbor Wednesday and Thursday, June 13-14. "Come Sail Basic" course is a pre-requisite for registration. Sailors should meet at the Fred Rhodes Pavilion in Roberts Point Park. Session one is set for 9:30 a.m., and the second session will be at 10:30 a.m. Spaces are limited, and the cost is $10 per child. Super Saturdays Fun, family, playing and learning activities held for kids and their parents. Sand Castles: Ages five and up can learn the secrets of sand sculpture Saturday, July 21. Meet at 1:30 pm., at the beach end of Avenue G under the flag. Hooligans Learn hooliganism essentials such as rubber band shooting, water balloon tossing, and other secret activities on Mondays, June 18 and July 9, at 2:30 pm. Supplies are provided for kids ages five and older. Spaces are limited, and the cost is $2 per child per session. Activities will be held at the Girl Scout hut. Kids Cook Learn some basic cooking skills and get a bite to eat Wednesday, June 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $2 per child per session. Activities will be held at the Girl Scout hut. Cupcake Decorating Learn cake-decorating basics from professional Lou Cinfici and decorate your own cupcake Monday, July 9, at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $2 per child per session. Activities will be held at the Girl Scout hut. Open Gym Port Aransas Independent School District athletic department staff supervises gym time for fifth graders and up, Monday through Friday, from 3-6 p.m. No pre-registration required for the free activity. Meet at Port Aransas High School gym, 100 S. Station St. Swimming lessons Learn to swim at the Port Aransas Community Park pool. Spaces are available for ages six months to 12 years old. Parents may register at the Parks and Recreation office at 739 W. Ave. A, across from the Civic Center, by calling 749-4158, or online at http://cityofportaransas. org/summerSwimForm. cfm. Classes will be broken down by age. Classes are a total of eight days and run from Tuesday through Friday, June 26-July 6, and July 16-27. |
