EDUCATION NOTES:
In their own words. . .
BETTY SMITH
The sixth grade reading curriculum is very diverse. Included in our studies are short stories, novels, biographies, drama, myths, legends and poetry. The hope is that by exposing the students to so many different things, the ones who enjoy reading will continue to do so, and that, perhaps, the ones who don't will stumble onto something that interests them. Sixth graders, like adults, have a variety of interests.
One thing I have found that does seem to interest all sixth graders is humor. If it is comical, they tend to enjoy it. Because of this, the students usually get a real kick out of the limerick section of our poetry unit. Each year I let them try their hand at writing limericks. This year's class wrote some exceptionally good ones.
Members of the sixth grade class wrote the following limericks.
There once was a bug named
Mouse.
He lived in a giant house.
He was sitting on a mat
When suddenly came a cat
And that was the end of Mouse.

and Thomas Forsberg
I really like chocolate milk.
It is a lot smoother than silk.
With a big tall glass,
I slipped on the grass
And spilled my chocolate milk.

Who decided one day to bake.
Oh, the turnout was sad,
Cause his baking was bad,
But what fun he had with that
