Winter Old-Lympics set Feb. 17 and 18 Tennis players who can a partner who age, added to his or hers, amounts to 100 or more, are invited to enter the 11th annual Bill Morgan Memorial Winter Old-Lympics Tennis Tournament. It will be held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 17 and 18. Men's, women's and mixed doubles are played on the Port Aransas school courts. Entry forms and fees must be turned in at the South Jetty newspaper office, 141 W. Cotter, before 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15. Forms are available at the newspaper office. Entry fee is $12 per person per event. Proceeds will be donated to the Port Aransas Independent School District for use in the tennis program. An awards dinner will be held Feb. 18 at the home of Murray and Mary Judson, members of the Port Aransas Tennis Association, sponsor of the tournament. The association will provide the main course, and players are asked to bring side dishes. Mixed doubles will be played that Saturday, and men's and women's doubles will be played that Sunday. Mixed doubles players should report to the courts at 8:30 a.m., and matches will begin at 9 a.m. Men's and women's doubles players should report to the courts at 12:30 p.m., and matches will begin at 1 p.m. Balls will be provided. United States Tennis Association league format will be used, with two sets making up a match. A 10-point tie-break will determine the winner if sets are split. First, second and consolation places will be awarded in each category. Players who do not have a partner may contact Jim Anderson or Murray Judson, and arrangements will be made to find a partner. The Winter Old-Lympics Tennis Tournament is held in honor of its originator, the late Bill Morgan, who was instrumental in founding the Port Aransas Tennis Association and the Winter Old-Lympics. Morgan founded the tournament as a means of bringing permanent residents and Winter Texans together. The tournament is sponsored by the tennis association and underwritten by the South Jetty newspaper and Fox Yacht Sales. |
