New video: Labor Day holiday draws crowds - click here to watch Filing opens Monday for city, school posts Monday, Feb. 12, is the first day candidates may apply for a place on Port Aransas City Council and Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees ballots. Technically, the first day to file is Feb. 10, but that falls on a Saturday and city hall and the school offices will be closed. The last day for applications for a place on the ballots is Monday, March 12. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on that date. The city secretary's office and the school district will begin accepting applications for early ballots to be voted by mail on Tuesday, March 13. Ballots will be mailed to applicants as soon as they are available. Candidates will draw for the order in which their names will appear on the ballot on Friday, March 16, at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12, is the last day voters can register in time to vote in the May 12 election, or to transfer voter registration to a different county. Early voting will run from Monday, April 30, through, Tuesday, May 8, with election day scheduled for Saturday, May 12. City council places 1 (Beverly Charles), 3 (Jerry Watson, who died Jan. 9) and 5 (Rick Pratt) are due to expire in May. Watson's position will be filled tonight, Thursday, Feb. 8, by the city council. That person will serve only until the May city election. Places 4, 5 and 6 are up for election on this year's school board ballot. Currently, Bob Smith occupies Place 4, Chuck Borders is in Place 5 and Rick Adams is in Place 6. |
