Each culvert is 8 feet by 3 feet and weighs about 17,500 pounds, workers said. The pictured culverts were destined to be buried under Cotter Street and attached to underground culverts already installed along Oleander Street. The system is designed to comfortably allow 127 cubic feet of rainwater per second to flow from an outfall at Port Aransas Municipal Harbor, said Orlando Ortiz, a professional engineer with Urban Engineering, which is heading up the project. Officials hope to have the new drainage system working by mid- January. The rest of the project, which includes rebuilding Oleander Street and installing new sidewalks, likely will be finished by early February, Ortiz said. Denise Littleton of Port Aransas was taking a bath not long ago when her kitten, Maggie, suddenly jumped in the water with her. Even more surprising, Maggie didn't jump right back out. She liked it. "She pranced around in it," Denise said. "We couldn't keep her out of it." Denise and her husband decided to bring Maggie to the beach to see how she liked the water there. MONDAY, DEC. 3 • 7:45 a.m. Coast Guard Station Port Aransas received a call from Rockport police reporting a johnboat taking on water near St. Joseph Island. The station launched a 25-foot boat that arrived on scene and found three people on the shore. The boat called Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, which sent a helicopter. More ... Lou Ann Smith, of Port Aransas, grimaces as Paramedic Sabrina Millard administers a flu shot on Tuesday, Dec. 11, but she later said Millard was 'very good' at giving painless immunizations. Residents lined up at the EMS headquarters, 705 W. Ave. A, to get the shots, which were reserved for the first 100 people who registered. The flu season generally peaks in South Texas about midwinter and lasts through March. More ...
