Students to sell soup, bowls to benefit local food pantry
      Port Aransas High School's new service-learning class is creating ceramic bowls and will sell them - along with a soup meal - as a charity project. The meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the H.G. Olsen Elementary School cafeteria.

     Members of Port Aransas High School's theater arts class perform in "The Haunted House on Station Street" for an audience of students from H.G. Olsen Elementary School and Brundrett Middle School on Thursday, Nov. 8. The comedy play, written by theater arts students, was performed on stage at PAHS.

Moreno wins photo contest
      Port Aransas High School senior Therisha Moreno has won a photo contest. Moreno was one of three PAHS yearbook class students who attended a workshop conducted at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi by Herff Jones, a yearbook publisher, on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Girl Scout service set
      A Girl Scout Investiture and Rededication Service has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov 19. It will be at the Girl Scout hut, 739 W. Ave. A, across from city hall. Girl Scouts are asked to show up in uniform to help set up at the usual meeting time of 5:30 p.m.

The world is a classroom
      Who was your greatest teacher? I found myself pondering this question during one of my recent walks to the supermarket. I remembered someone who I hadn't ever thought of as one of my teachers. His name is Ron Rae, and he was a superb architect and cabinetmaker in Washington, D.C. I became his employee and apprentice of sorts in 1978 after finishing my formal education.

Generous donations for the troops
     Trinity Day School students pose with hundreds of personal items collected to donate to U.S. military troops who are members of the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, 380th ECES Squadron in Al Dhafra Air Base, on the desert island of Dubai. One of the squadron members is Stephanie Hinojosa, a 2005 graduate of Port Aransas High School. While the deadline for donated items is past, Trinity will accept donations of cash and checks for postage and to buy phone cards for troops until Friday, Nov. 16. Contact Nana Ward, 749-6448.

Toy Round Up under way
Give a gift that will make a difference this holiday season
      Do some extra shopping or fork over some cash so the less fortunate children in this community will have a happy holiday. The 10th annual Port Aransas Emergency Services Toy Round Up is gearing up, and toys and monetary donations are needed. The Toy Round Up program helps lower income families in Port Aransas provide toys for their children.

Latchkey needs canned goods for holiday tree
      Help Latchkey kids decorate their tree for the annual Holiday Forest by donating canned goods and nonperishable items. The children will be using the items as decorations for their tree. The Fruits of Christmas is the theme for the 2007 forest sponsored by the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, which also sponsors the Latchkey program.
