      The huge crane that had dominated the Harbor Island skyline for more than a decade is gone - mostly - but its place has been taken by three or more cranes that were needed to dismantle the larger equipment. When the big crane is fully dismantled, all the cranes will leave.

      This rainbow was seen from Marina Beach RV Resort on Cotter Avenue on Monday, Oct. 1. Several photo shots were taken and placed together to get a picture of the whole rainbow. A second outer rainbow is barely visible on the outer left.

Gateway Brass to perform at PACT
      The Gateway Brass will perform in a free concert Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Port Aransas Community Theatre. It will be at 7:30 p.m., at the theater, 2327 State Hwy. 361. Gateway Brass, the brass ensemble of the United States Air Force Band of the West, is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Most doors remain open for the holiday
      Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8, will be observed only by city hall, the post office and one bank in Port Aransas. For everyone else it will be business as usual. Although city hall will be closed to the public Monday, city employees will be hard at work behind closed doors. Law enforcement and emergency services personnel will be on duty, however.

      The Coastal Bend Bays Foundation will take up the question of beach management on Monday, Oct. 8, at a free forum at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour in room 1003 of the the Carlos Truan Natural Resources Center at the university. The meeting is set for 6 p.m.

Chugging along
      The tug Colonel, out of Morgan City, La., tows the oceangoing barge Energy7001 past Roberts Point in Port Aransas recently, inbound toward the Port of Corpus Christi. Barges like Energy7001 regularly are rotated in for maintenance and repair, and require an oceangoing tug to shepherd them to and from their work stations.

Council, P&Z to talk impact
      City council members and planning and zoning commissioners will sit down on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. in the council chamber for a joint workshop on impact fees. Impact fees, basically, are fees charged developers and builders to help offset the additional burden that projects put on city infrastructure such as streets, storm sewers and water lines.
