July sales tax return takes dip

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs sent sales tax allocations of $302.9 million to Texas cities, up 9.1 percent compared to September 2006. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax revenues are running 7.1 percent higher than last year.

September's sales tax allocations include local sales taxes collected in July and reported to the Comptroller in August.

The check sent to Port Aransas does not reflect the stateside increase, however. The allocation was down 0.94 percent, but up for the year to date by 1.27 percent. The city banked a check for $160,672.98 compared to last year's check for $162,213.43.

Corpus Christi chalked up a 4.61 percent increase in its September allocation, and allocations for the year to date are up by 5.75 percent.

Across the ship channel from Port Aransas, Aransas Pass enjoyed a 2.54 percent increase in its September allocation. For the year to date, allocations are up by 6.02 percent.

Ingleside's city coffers were enriched by an allocation up 2.59 percent for September, and allocations are up by 5.43 percent for the year.

In Rockport, the September allocation increased 1.50 percent over the same period a year ago. For the year to date, however, allocations are behind by 1.30 percent.

On the southern Texas coast, Port Isabel banked an allocation check up by 12.66 percent over September 2006. Allocations to date are up by 12.45 percent.

South Padre Island took a hit, with its September allocation slipping by 11.57 percent. For the year to date, allocations are up by 3.43 percent.

On the northern Texas coast, Galveston reaped a 4.38 percent increase in its September allocation, and for the year to date allocations are up by 3.39 percent.

San Antonio, home of many visitors to and second homeowners in Port Aransas, logged a 2.75 percent increase in its September allocation, leaving allocations for the year to date up by 7.15 percent.
