Was TEA boss squeezed out?
      Dr. Shirley Neeley, the former superintendent of schools in Galena Park who Gov. Rick Perry named the Texas Commissioner of Education in early 2004, left that job July 1, after learning in mid-June that Perry wouldn't re-appoint her.

Sports-challenged, but still cheering
      I'm gonna fess up here. I was a high school cheerleader from 1968-1971, and I didn't know what a first down was until 1976 when I had to edit sports stories. "First and 10, do it again! First and 10, do it again!" It rhymed, it got the crowd going and, hey, we won.

I'll spell it out for you
      I live in Austin, Texas. I also live in Port Aransas. I remember that because I pay taxes to both places. I make my living in Austin. And I have my best living in Port Aransas when I get there. Everybody seems to want to live in Austin. We've got eight new employees at the radio station I am with in Austin. They all came from California.

Protect night sky
      As the city works towards the improvement of Roberts Point, one suggestion I would like to make is for the city to work toward protecting the night sky. As a child in the 50's, we would vacation in Port Aransas every summer, and I still remember sitting outside our tourist court staring at the stars.
