I.B. Magee: Nearly there
Close Workers, left, put final touches on the electrical system for the new park office building, which will also house showers. Right, the new building dwarfs the old office. Workers are within about three weeks of finishing work on Nueces County's I.B. Magee Beach Park, between Horace Caldwell Pier and the south jetty.
The park, which has deteriorated in recent years, is getting a massive facelift, starting with bathrooms facing the beach and continuing to a replacement building for the old office and the shower building.
In the future, according to plans, are more camping spaces including electricity and Internet access, that will greatly increase the camping capacity of the park.
The original shower building, about in the center of the park, is due to be demolished when the new office building is finished.
Included in that building are laundry facilities for use by campers.
A display scheduled for the building, put together by The University of Texas Marine Science Institute and funded by the I.B. Magee family, will aid visitors in understanding the Gulf of Mexico beach.
