Education foundation slates Mardi Gras

Mark your calendars and dig out your beads for the Port Aransas Education Foundation (PAEF) fundraiser scheduled this fall.

"Mardi Gras in October" will be held at the Port Aransas Civic Center on Friday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 10 p.m.

The event will include silent and Chinese auctions, live music and a Cajun shrimp boil with a cash bar. Tickets will be $25 each, $50 per couple, or $500 to sponsor a table of 10. Each ticket holder will receive two free drink coupons and a raffle ticket for the reverse raffle.

Donation items are being requested for the auctions.

Art, accommodation vouchers, fishing trips, fishing supplies, rentals, boy stuff, girl stuff, fun stuff - any stuff will be accepted," said board member Michelle Sowers, who is charge of the event.

"We are open to any suggestions and will be grateful for any donation that will make our auction a success," said Sowers.

Table sponsors are being sought and may be reserved now by contacting Sowers. Tickets will go on sale Friday, Sept. 7.

During the past school year, PAEF awarded more than $20,000 in grants to the Port Aransas Independent School District.

At last year's event, $13,000, was raised. The PAEF has set an event goal of $20,000 for this year's event.

PAEF is in the process of creating a newsletter to keep everyone informed of PAEF activities and how donations are being utilized. More information and pictures will be added to its Web site, www.portaeducation.org.
