She had been a barber for more than 40 years and founded Shear Haven in Port Aransas with her friend, Jean Dukes.
Before cancer took its toll, Borders was an avid fisherman and held the Deep Sea Roundup record for red snapper for nearly eight years. She will be remembered behind the wheel of a white convertible sports cars with the license plate, "MIKKI B".
She was born in Paint Rock on June 12 in a year she made her husband, Chuck Borders, promise not to reveal. She grew up in Arizona, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and Mason.
She moved to Port Aransas in 1980.
In addition to her husband, Borders is survived by her grandson, whom she adopted, Syrus Borders of Port Aransas; a sister, Peggy Neal of Fredericksburg, a brother, Roy Boring of Truth or Consequences, NM, a granddaughter, C'Yerah Sprinkle of Sugar Land, and her daughter, Edie Barsch of Brady.
Her mother, Ann Marie Boring and brother, Tom Boring, preceded her in death.
Her ashes will be scattered with those of her mother and brother in Mason in private family services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Port Aransas Rotary Club scholarship fund or the American Cancer Society.
