Mean 'Greene machine' takes two race wins at CC Speedway
GRAPHIC BY PAM GREENE First times two Pappy Greene, Port Aransas Motor Sports No. 13 stock car driver, swept the field in his class Saturday, May 19. In his Mustang GT he won his heat and feature races, earning a trophy and money. He stands with trophy in hand in front of his 'Greene machine' on the track at CC Speedway. Fans were on their feet, as lap after lap, Pappy Greene fought to keep the lead in the feature race at CC Speedway Saturday, May 19.
Greene, of Port Aransas, held on to win the race and a trophy, despite the efforts of the track's fastest mini stock racecar, whose driver raced side by side for most of the 20-lap race.
This was the second night of racing in the 2007 season for Port Aransas Motor Sports No. 13, and Greene had a successful night, also winning his heat race that night. The first night he raced, he placed third in the heat race and second in the feature race.
"That was awesome," Greene said as he received his trophy. "G.B. (Carter, track fastest car driver in the Texas Thunder class) raced me clean. It was such fun with both of us racing just as hard as we could," he said.
Greene drives a green Mustang GT in the four-cylinder class at the quarter-mile oval asphalt racetrack that hold races each Saturday night. The car sports a horse's tail that sways and a wind-up key that turns as he circles the track.
The car, knick-named "Kermit", also has a Kermit the Frog co-driver, who "helps navigate the track". Kermit rides inside the car during races in his own driving seat complete with harness attached to the roll cage.
"It sure is nice to know you have a chance to win each time you pull on to the track," Greene said, speaking of the racecar's competitive status.
Greene, an ASE certified master auto technician, rebuilt the racecar from a dirt track car he bought three years ago, "tweaking" it to bring it up to speed to be in contention to win. He tows it to the track with "Herrb", a short bus Greene bought, cut off part of the top and converted to a truck/motor home. The unusual combination draws a lot of attention. "Herrb" is an acronym for Hurricane Evacuation Recreational Race Bus.
Greene invites everyone to come see him race on Saturday nights.
"This is a family oriented track. The kids love the wind-up key and tail, and often question me about how much Kermit helps," said Greene.
