Many summer programs offered
      The Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department will offer a plethora of programs to entertain kids living in and visiting town this summer. Programs will include swimming lessons, catamaran cruises, "Chill Out Time", mad scientist workshops, "Come Sail" basic, "Come Sail" advanced, "Super Saturdays", hooligans, "Kids Cook" and cupcake decorating.

Big winners
      The Port Aransas UIL academic team of 21 students took the regional championship April 13 in Brenham, besting more than 70 other schools at the meet. Many of those students appeared before the Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees on Thursday, May 10, to be recognized for their accomplishments.

Commitment pays off
      First off, I would like to once again thank everyone who assisted and supported the 2006-07 Lady Marlin basketball team. Special thanks goes to all the businesses who advertised during our radio broadcasts on 91.1 FM KSGR. What an awesome deal that was for our players and the Port Aransas community!

Masterful musicians
      Four Port Aransas High School Band students have qualified to compete in state solo and ensemble competition May 28 at Texas State University in San Marcos. The Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees honored the students during a school board meeting on Thursday, May 10. The students gave performances during the meeting too.

Register kids for camp tomorrow
      Registration for the first session of Port Aransas Youth Council (PAYC) camp begins tomorrow, Friday, May 18. Parents and guardians may register at 6:15 p.m. at the H.G. Olsen Elementary School cafeteria, 100 S. Station St. Online registration will begin at the same time and can be found at the Web site, www.cityofportaransas. org.

      Fifth grade teacher Rhonda Burger shows off the gift she got at the staff appreciation luncheon that the PTO held for H.G. Olsen Elementary School on Friday, May 11 at the school library. All staff members got gifts. At Brundrett Middle School, parent volunteers held a teacher appreciation tea by parent volunteers on Wednesday, May 9.

Bands perform tonight at PAHS
      Band members from the Port Aransas Independent School District will perform in a district-wide band concert tonight, Thursday, May 17. It will be held at 7 p.m. in the Port Aransas High School gymnasium, 100 S. Station St. The concert will begin with the Brundrett Middle School sixth grade band, followed by the seventh/eighth grade band.

Supplies, workers needed by PAYC
      Employees, supplies and warm bodies are needed for the Port Aransas Youth Council (PAYC) camp this summer. Rachael King, assistant director of the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department, is asking for volunteers to help with the different PAYC activities that are held through the program during June and July.

McKeever surprised by 'hooding' ceremony arranged by prinCIpal
      H.G. Olsen Elementary School teacher Gina McKeever got a terrible shock when she traveled recently to St. Paul, Minn., for a family member 's wedding. While she was in St. Paul, her 83-year-old father-in-law, Tom McKeever, of St. Paul, passed away of a heart ailment. That was bad enough.

Fair funds books and more
      The Trinity-by-the-Sea Day School had a successful book fair, according to school director Nana Ward. Parents donated more than $425 worth of books for Teacher's Appreciation Week in honor of the teachers. A profit of more than $300 was made for new equipment in classrooms. The families brought picnic lunches to share with their children then shopped for books.

Chances running out to support Project Graduation's 2007 party
      A little more than a week remains to help Project Graduation organizers raise their final funds. Two fundraisers will continue through Friday, May 25: Curb painting and a silent auction. Residents may get their house numbers painted on the curbs in front of their homes or on a concrete block that can be placed in front of homes for $20.

      The Port Aransas High School yearbook staff is offering a spring photo opportunity to the public today, Thursday, May 17. The photos will be taken at the high school commons area upstairs at 100 S. Station St. Individuals, families or friends may have their photos taken.

      Academic achievement by Port Aransas High School students was celebrated at the annual academic banquet on Monday, May 14, at Fins Grill and Ice House.
