PAHS hosts tourney
Players from 18 other cities as nearby as Rockport and as far away as Mason competed.
The PAHS netters began the regional tournament yesterday, Wednesday, April 25, in Brenham. It will conclude today, Thursday, April 26.
In the qualifiers tournament, tiebreaks were the order of the day.
Kevin Drewry and Katy Bridges won the consolation bracket. They opened with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Barrera/ Garcia of Premont. In the first match of the consolation bracket they drew a bye, then stopped Petrus/Bloemer of Skidmore-Tynan, 6-2, 2-6, (10-6 in the tie-break). In the finals they met teammates David Thrasher and Meagan Callaway, who they defeated 6-1, 6-2.
Thrasher and Callaway were defeated by Petrova/Schmidt from Skidmore Tynan, 6-3, 4-6, (8-10 in the tie break) in their opening game. Moving to the consolation bracket, they had a bye in the first round, then went up against teammates Kevin Drewry and Katy Bridges who defeated them in the finals.
The duo of Clark Smith and Matt Dunton started with a tie-break, winning over Garcia/Ramirez of Falfurrias, 5-7, 6-2 (10-3 in the tie-break). The met Salazar/Ede of Knippa next, going to yet another tie-break, 6-4, 7 (7-5 in the tie-break). They were finished by Hamilton/Matus of Edna, 6-0, 6-0.
In girls singles, Patricia Stievo opened with a bye, then was defeated by Hillary Lauer of Yoakum, 7-5, 6- 2. Going to the consolation bracket, Stievo took on Monica Lopez of Premont, losing 6-2, 6-4.
