'Barefoot' ends run this weekend
      The final four performances of "Barefoot in the Park" will be presented tonight, Thursday, April 26, through Sunday, April 29. The performances, at the Port Aransas Community Theatre (PACT), will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday night. The final performance will be a matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Blessing of Fleet to be Saturday
      Port Aransas will continue a centuries old tradition started in southern Europe when the third annual Blessing of the Fleet is held here on Saturday, April 28. In European fishing communities, a blessing from the local priest was thought to ensure a safe and bountiful fishing season.

Patterson will join Saturday cleanup

      Texas General Land Office Commissioner Jerry Patterson will be in Port Aransas to kick-off the 21st annual Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 28. Patterson will be introduced by Mayor Claude Brown at 8:45 a.m. on the beach at Avenue G.

Monthly walk reveals much about the beach
      Find out what washes ashore in Port Aransas during a free, guided beach walk tomorrow, Friday, April 27. The walk is sponsored by the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department. It will start at 9 a.m. by the red flag next to Horace Caldwell Pier.

Winning bird watchers
      The Laughing Gals receive their second place award (with 112 species) at the Great Texas Birding Classic awards lunch on Sunday, April 22, at Plantation Suites in Port Aransas. They competed in the Roughwings Division against other teams up and down the Texas Coast and were sponsored by Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce-Tourist Bureau.

      Ashley Korth of Port Aransas and Ross Juricek of Plano announce their pending wedding on May 11. The couple will exchange vows in Las Vegas at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time. City seeks permit to move sand
      The City of Port Aransas is seeking permission from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue using heavy equipment to move sand around in certain areas of the beach. On Thursday, April 19, the City Council voted 7-0 to apply to the Corps of Engineers for a permit to move the sand in an area of the beach that the Corps considers to be in its jurisdiction.

Aww, shucks. . . thanks!
      An oyster shucking party that benefited Project Graduation paid off by $568.87. The party, in its second year, raised $25 last year with 75 attendees. It grew to a crowd of 400 this year, despite inclement weather. Presenting the check to Project Graduation organizers are party sponsors Jeff and Chaille Logue, at left, and Jim and Kelly Polewchak, fourth and fifth from left.

Super-foods: Good, good for you
      We are always being told what foods are bad for us. "Don't eat fried foods!" or "Carbs are bad!!" But, in the last few years, there have been many medical reports on foods that are good for us. They are the so-called super foods. And to my delight, many of these are fruits or vegetables I enjoy. The berries: Strawberries, blueberries and cranberries are all great.

Tall Ship A.R.C. Gloria will revisit Port Aransas
      Make plans to be on the Port Aransas waterfront next Thursday morning, May 3, and again Sunday evening, Mary 6. On Thursday, you'll see the A.R.C. Gloria, the Colombian Tall Ship, sail in through the jetties at about 9 a.m. On Sunday, channel watchers can bid the ship farewell as she sails out through the jetties at about 7:30 p.m.

Music is on agenda for First Friday
      Music will be the theme of the next First Friday artists' reception. The reception will be held Friday, May 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Art Center for the Islands, 323 N. Alister St. "The Color of Music" will be depicted in art work by Tiddle Caylor, Monique Dix, Marthe Minford-Mas, Doris Rump and Reefka Schneider.

Vaccinations offered during rabies clinic
      Pets may be vaccinated against rabies during the city's annual rabies clinics slated for Thursday and Saturday, May 3 and 5. The clinics are held in cooperation with the Island Animal Clinic, 319 Beach St. Rabies shots and city tags will be discounted to $5 for unaltered animals and $2.50 for spayed or neutered animals.

      This month's selection for residential yard of the month is the home of Billy and Gayla Wiggins located at 540 Lydia Ann Channel. They have a beautifully landscaped yard of bermuda grass with a variety of plants and flowers including bird of paradise, oleanders, pigmy palms, Queen Ann palms, crepe myrtle, Japanese boxwood, red and yellow hibiscus, wax-leaf ligustrum and wandering jew.

      John Thompson is living proof that you can get past a life-threatening case of cancer. WAY past it. Thirty years past it. Thompson was a 23-year-old Corpus Christi man attending college at Southwest Texas State University (now simply Texas State University) in 1976 when he one day noticed a lump on one of his testicles. He waited for about a month to see if it would go away.

City begins negotiations with landowners to acquire land for proposed new road
      This could be called "you-scratchmy back, I'll-scratch-yours" development. Port Aransas city officials are offering several property owners the opportunity to build a denser residential development than zoning ordinances normally would allow - if the landowners will give some of their property to the city for construction of a new road.

      Ray Farrell throws a dresser drawer into a dumpster at the city transfer station on Saturday, April 21, during a free dump day sponsored by the Keep Port Aransas Beautiful organization, the city of Port Aransas and Allied Waste-BFI. Farrell and many others brought truckloads of junk to get rid of.

Brush disposal poses problems for residents
      Port Aransas home owners who want to trim trees or brush have four options: Hire someone locally to do it, do it yourself, trim the brush and pile the trimmings out front and call the city to pick them up - or, if you hire someone from out of town, be prepared to fork over some cash to have the trimmings accepted at the city landfill.

Sharing the wealth
      The arts programs in Port Aransas support each other, as this contribution from the Port Aransas Community Theater (PACT) to the Art Center for the Islands' building fund demonstrates. PACT donated $585 from the March 9 performance of 'Over the Rainbow ' to the art center. Accepting the donation from PACT treasurer Jack Dreessen is art center treasurer Bobbie Mussett.

South Jetty wins big in South Texas Press Contest
      The South Jetty tied with the Fredericksburg Standard for second place and was 25 points behind the Pleasanton Express, which won sweepstakes, in the South Texas Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest. Awards were presented in Kerrville during the association's 80th annual convention Thursday through Saturday, April 19-21.

Members needed for city boards
      The City of Port Aransas is looking for a few good people to serve on its Board of Adjustments and Appeals and its Parks and Recreation Board. The Board of Adjustments and Appeals is a five-member board, plus one alternate, that meets to decide appeals from the refusal of building permits or from administrative decisions by the city building official.
