New group seeks to help schools
      A group formed this spring, with respected former state Sen. Bill Ratliff, R-Mt. Pleasant, as its leader, hopes to boost public schools, add statewide kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs, and reduce class sizes. Called Raise Your Hand, the group includes former Texas Education Commissioner Mike Moses and a Who's Who of Texas chief executive officers.

Island Road needs top priority
      Expansion of the Island Road (officially State Hwy. 361) between Beach Access Road 1 and Park Road 22 is too far down on the highway department's priority list for comfort. A decision on the best option to handle existing and anticipated traffic has not been made, so the design phase is little more than a glimmer in the eyes of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

'Tough as a hard boiled egg?' Ha!
      Am I the only one who cannot peel a boiled egg? It is one of those things that I have pretty much come to accept. I really like boiled eggs. They are a wonderful solution to the nothing-to-eatwithout really-having-tocook while-home-alone problem. First of all, they are easy to make. Run some water into a pot, place eggs in water, bring water to a boil, wait, remove eggs, peel and eat.

Time to step up to the plate
      It's bad enough that we are without a contested race on the city council. Thanks to Keith Donley's filing, we had a race until incumbent Beverly Charles withdrew. Now, although Charles' name is on the ballot, to paraphrase the old saying, "if elected, she will not serve".

Remembering another sad campus
      The beauty and pride of the university in Virginia will always possess a scar instilled last Monday. There is no forgetting. Think back to 1966. Another attack on a university. The killer also did his killing on a university campus - the campus of the University of Texas. It, too, was on a day of school.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
      Don't change it Those of us who were involved in the beginning of our library, back in the early '80s, were determined that it should be a "people's library," not a city library. All the furnishings, office equipment, shelves and the entire original collection were accumulated by volunteers and paid for with private donations that resulted from a very intense fund-raising campaign.
