Final performances include matinee
      The final performances of "What the Butler Saw," an adult comedy playing at the Port Aransas Community Theater, will be presented this weekend. The play will be performed tonight, Thursday, Jan. 18, through Sunday, Jan. 21. Evening performances today through Saturday start at 7:30 p.m. Sunday's performance will be a matinee starting at 2:30 p.m.

Space limited for Garden Club Home Tour bus trip
      Don't take a chance that any tickets will be left for the bus tours for the 19th annual Tour of Homes on Saturday, Jan. 20. Advance purchase is strongly advised by organizers since space is limited on the buses. Tickets are available at $15 per person for bus tours and $10 for selfdrive tours.

      Baked potatoes, shrimp bisque and more will be served at the Great Potato Bake tonight, Thursday Jan. 18. Tickets may be purchased at the door for the dinner to be held at the Community Center, 408 N. Alister St. The Kiwanis Club of Port Aransas sponsors the dinner annually.

      The latest in a successful series of "-ology" workshops sponsored by the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 27. It's "Gulf-ology," and it aims at giving people a better acquaintance with the Gulf of Mexico, which lies just off Port Aransas' front door and is responsible for bringing many, if not most, of the tourists to town each year.

      Several folks play blackjack at the annual Rotary Club Casino Night held Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Civic Center. After feasting on fresh fried fish, visitors played roulette, craps, blackjack and other games - all in fun, with profits going to scholarships for Port Aransas High School seniors.

Filing period opens Feb. 12
      Monday, Feb. 12, is the first day candidates may apply for a place on Port Aransas city council and Port Aransas Independent School District Board of Trustees ballots, since Feb. 10 falls on a Saturday and city hall will be closed. The last day for applications for a place on the ballots is Monday, March 12. Applications must be received in the city secretary's office by 5 p.m. on that date.

Donate books for sale -- now!
      Back on April 16, 1987, the South Jetty reported that a book sale would be held in the Civic Center on April 23-24. "Several hundred" hardback and paperback books would be sold to benefit the Ellis Memorial Library. This year, for the 20th annual Book Sale, more than 10,000 volumes are expected to be on tables in the Civic Center, along with videotapes, audio tapes, DVDs and magazines.

      Writers from Massachusetts to South Carolina to Port Aransas took honors in the fourth annual Texas Laughing Gull Writing Contest. Winners were announced during a reception at the Port Aransas Community Center on Sunday, Jan. 14. The contest is based in Port Aransas.

      The Island Strippers quilting club that has met in Port Aransas for years is now meeting on North Padre Island. Darlene Rengler, a long-time member, said the group moved its meeting place several times, but this year has been unable to find a meeting place in Port Aransas.

      A Port Aransas woman was taken to a Corpus Christi hospital for treatment on Tuesday, Jan. 9, after her car hit a building in the 300 block of Cut-off Road. Police reports show that Stephanie Ann Moreno, 25, was sitting in her car outside a self-serve laundry with the engine running, waiting for her clothes to finish.

      Police detective Lt. Darryl Johnson checks out a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire that will be part of a city auction starting at 8 a.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 18. The Sunfire is joined by a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle as well as other vehicles and office and playground equipment the city has declared surplus. The auction is being held at the Civic Center, Cut-off Road and West Avenue A.

Recent burglaries solved
      Port Aransas police believe they've solved at least part of the string of vehicle burglaries that have plagued residents over the past few weeks. Detective Lt. Darryl Johnson said last week that police had charged five juveniles, all from Port Aransas, in the theft of about $6,000 worth of deep-sea fishing rods and reels from a boat docked in a Port Aransas harbor.

Not only that, don't try to use your Citgo gas card. Susser Holding Company, the company that owns what used to be Circle K, is changing the name of the stores to Stripes.

      L a s t w e e k I showed how the climate of Port Aransas is changing based on the 22-yearlong record of air temperature and rainfall recorded at the official National Weather Service Cooperative weather station on the grounds of The University of Texas Marine Science Institute. I showed how global warming can be verified from the number of days with the daily high temperature of 90 or higher.
