Ladies win tourney title

won the Ingleside Tourney Dec. 7-9,

beating three teams by wide margins,

and c oming fro m behind to beat a

fourth one.

took home the tournament's mostvaluab

le-player trophy. Tea mmates

Lia Phillips and Kathy Ashley nabbed

all-tourney honors.

Lady Marlins Coach Randy Henderson

said he wasn't surprised by

his team's performance.

“It's what we expect to do,” Henderson

said. “We're pleased, but we

expect to (win). It is the way it is.”

LadyCats. Skidmore-Tynan is a Class

2A team (Port Aransas is 1A) that had

a record of 9-2 coming in.

against the Marlins, sinking their first

five shots. Things still looked dicey

for the Lady Marlins in the fourth

quarter, when they fell as many as

three points behind before rallying

for a 35-29 win.

“The (Lady Marlins) didn't panic

and pulled out the win with a great

effort in the fourth quarter,” Henderson

said.

The Lady Marlins opened the tournament

with a 49-34 thrashing of the

Yoakum Lady Bulldogs, who come

from a Class 3A school.

“We started the game a little sluggish,

but Lia Phillips gave us a good

spark in the first quarter,” Henderson

said.

“Whitney Williams was very active

defensively, and Mary Teller and

Elaine Franco dished out a combined

n i ne as sists – one of my fa vorite

stats,” Henderson said.

The Lady Marlins steamrolled the

Three Rivers Lady Bulldogs, 64-29.

“ We played a stro ng firs t half,

sparked by our press defense in the

first quarter,” Henderson said.

Among other highlights: Whitney

Williams was 9 of 10 from the free

throw line.

led to a shellacking of the Ingleside

team, 49-14.

“Ev ery p laye r on our roster contributed

to this win,” Henderson said.

“It was nice o have the opportunity

to see all of our kids play hard and

contribute.

“We play Ingleside again on Dec.

1 8, a nd I exp ect th e y w i l l no t be

shooting as poorly as they did in this

game,” H enderson said. “We better

be ready.”
