Workshops set at art center on oil, watercolor painting, writing

Three workshops, one on oil painting, one on memoir writing and another on watercolor painting, have been scheduled for October at the Art Center for the Islands, 323 N. Alister St.

Two "You Can Paint" oil workshops by Robert Garden will be held Saturday, Oct. 14. The sessions will consist of a morning class from 9 a.m. to noon featuring a "Moonlight Stroll on Mustang Island Beach" and an afternoon class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. painting "Sunset on the Channel with Shrimp Boat". Pre-registration and a half-down deposit are due by Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The classes are designed for beginners to advanced levels with all art materials provided for the students; easel, canvases, palette of paints, brushes and detailed lesson plan. The fee for one session is $75 and $140 for both classes.

Garden is an award-winning artist, teacher of the year, author, founder and past president of the Corpus Christi Art Association and an honorary life-member of the Rockport Art Association.

More information and registration may be obtained by calling the art center or Robert Garden Art at (800) 356-4278. A writing class, Introduction to

Memoir and Mystery, by Beverly Charles will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Registration is required at the art center by Friday, Oct. 13. Tuition, including materials and supplies, is $35.

A minimum of seven and maximum of 20 participants is required.

Charles agrees with Austin J. App, "The Way to Creative Writing", that "Three things are necessary for becoming a writer: a good head, a thick skin and a soft heart."

"Please join me to explore strategies and techniques for writing memoir. We will use the arts, the senses, silence, questions and stories. You will write some of your own personal stories, read your stories, listen to the stories others have written, and have a good time with other memoir writers," said Charles.

A Making Watercolor Work For You workshop by artist Lee Ricks will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 and 28.

The cost for the workshop is $50 per day or $95 for both days. Preregistration and a half-down deposit are due by Tuesday, Oct. 17.

A supply list is available at the art center or by e-mail at artcenter@centurytel.net.
