FISHING REPORT
Tuna, shark, snapper, redfish still dominate

As the town gets ready for the Winter Texan influx that will be coming soon, fishing in the area remains constant.

John McNatt at Fisherman's Wharf said a lot of tuna is being caught, with 25 pulled in on one trip. Add in limits of red snapper, vermilion snapper, Atlantic sharpnose sharks and kingfish to the blackfin catches. North jetty anglers are catching more red drum.

Redfish, pompano, black drum, sand trout, speckled trout, whiting and stingray were among the fish caught off Horace Caldwell Pier said Nick Moss. Anglers were using squid, mullet and shrimp to lure the fish.

Fishermen out of Offshore Adventures have been catching Atlantic sharpnose shark and big red snapper, up to 18-pounders. Amberjack, ling, lane and vermilion snapper, kingfish and Spanish mackerel were weighed in with barracuda, Beverly Stapleton said. Big redfish are being caught at the end of the jetties. Piggy perch, live shrimp and croaker coaxed the bay fish to the line.

Ryan Janz of Dolphin Dock reported a 187-pound yellowfin was caught on a 12-hour trip on the Dolphin Express. Atlantic sharpnose shark, vermilion snapper, blacktip shark, barracuda, grouper, red snapper, dorado and blackfin and yellowfin tuna were brought in to the dock.

Boats from Deep Sea Headquarters have anglers reeling in coolers full of tuna on private charters and open boat trips. A 24-hour trip on the Pelican with Capt. John Brennan netted anglers 10 big 50-pound-plus amberjack and a 40-pound Warsaw grouper. Lots of tuna, limits of red snapper and dorado are being caught on the 10 and 12-hour private charters. Open (party) boats on 8-hour trips are fishing for red snapper until the end of October, racking up limits on each trip. The 12-hour party boat trips are catching a lot of tuna and red snapper, according to Rick Laros. The bay guides are catching redfish and trout.

Sharon Keehlisen of Woody's Sports Center reported fishermen are catching redfish in the East Flats and black drum in the surf. Anglers on the Island Queen are loading up on shark. Spanish mackerel are being caught off the south jetty. Big snapper, dolphin and barracuda are being pulled into the boats from offshore.
