Funding extended for additional constable

The new budget year is here, but that doesn't mean you can relax on the beach.

Nueces County Constable Pct. 4 Bobby Sherwood announced this week that the Nueces County Commissioners Court has extended funding for an additional deputy constable through the next fiscal year.

While the deputy constable is no different from any of Sherwood's other deputies, the result of having another deputy on board has been a dramatic increase over the past few months in citations for beach littering and glass containers as well as traffic offenses.

Sherwood said the county is also pursuing grant money for the position. If it's secured, it would mean 80 percent of the deputy's position would be paid for through the grant, with 20 percent coming from county funds.

"That's a win-win situation," Sherwood said.

He said if grant money is approved, the grant would begin in October of next year - thus, commissioners funded the position only for 48 weeks this time.
