PAHS .Challenge!' team falls

BY DAN PARKER SOUTH JETTY REPORTER

A team of four Tuloso-Midway High School students narrowly beat a Port Aransas High School team in a game show-style academic competition televised locally on Monday, Dec. 11.

The game, called “Challenge!” was broadcast on KEDT, a public television station in Corpus Christi. A repeat of the episode is scheduled to be broadcast at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.

“Challenge!” is similar to the nationally syndicated television game show “Jeopardy!” “Challenge!” pits area high school teams in tournamentstyle competition. Teams that win move on to more competitions until a tournament winner is decided.

The team from Tuloso-Midway beat Port Aransas by a score of 145- 140. It was part of the first round of competitions.

Tuloso-Midway is a Class 4A high school that's much larger than PAHS, a Class 1A school. The Port Aransas team members who competed were Seb Tugwell, Matt Dunton, Patricia Stievo and Leah Matthews, all seniors.

The lead changed hands back and forth during the game, which remained a nail-biter to the end.

In the last 10 seconds of the game, the Tuloso-Midway team correctly spelled and defined the word “morose,” putting the T-M team ahead by five points. Time then ran out before another question could be asked.
