DICK HAYES Richard J. "Dick" Hayes died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at his home in San Antonio, following a long battle with cancer. He considered Port Aransas his second home, where he loved boating, "tour g u i d i n g " a n d spending time with friends.
Hayes was born in Rochester, N.Y., on Sept. 19, 1931. He graduated from Edison Tech High and joined the United States Air Force in the early 1950's. He served stateside as a staff sergeant at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls.
Hayes returned to Texas in the early 1960's and remained a resident of San Antonio for more than 40 years. He was co-owner of Alamo Bail Bonds for 30 years and a former president of the Bexar County Bail Bond Association. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Hayes was preceded in death by his son, Mark F. Hayes; parents, Ronald and Catherine Hayes; and a brother, Ronald F. Hayes Jr.
He is survived by his companion, Lavonne Rose of Adkins; two daughters, Debra Warren of Rochester, and Michele (Tom) Weatherley of Minnesota; a son, Richard J. Hayes Jr. of San Antonio; grandchildren, Richard (Erin) Warren, Michelle Hayes, Matthew and Kayla Weatherley, Alexander and Aric Hayes; an uncle, Robert (Gwen) Hayes of Florida; nieces and nephews, Colleen (Kirk) Walker, Ronald J. Hayes, Lorie Hayes, Heather Hayes, and Scott and Kevin Jamieson, all of Rochester; and his pet, Beaches.
Visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 12, followed by a Rosary. A service was held at the Porter Loring Chapel in San Antonio Monday, Nov. 13. Interment was private.
A tribute to Hayes will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Shorty's.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, P. O. Box 1657, San Antonio, TX 78296.
