EDUCATION NOTES
The counseling department at Olsen Elementary and Brundrett Middle schools has implemented a new guidance program called "Learning For Life" in which students learn life lessons through a character building curriculum. This program, which is enhanced as well as supported by our on-going mentor program, has been well received by staff as well as students.
The "Learning For Life" program was designed to help y o u t h m e e t the challenge o f g r o w i n g up by teaching character and good decision making skills, and then linking those skills to the real world. The program is aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and provides opportunities for critical and creative thinking and discussion, and writing too! The themes instill in youth the importance of respecting the rights of all people, and prepares the students to participate in and give leadership to American society. The students are eager to participate in our lessons each week.
At the middle school level, the students will expand on the themes presented at the elementary level. There is a career exploration component that will be presented during the second semester. We hope to utilize community role models as guest speakers to provide classroom presentations on career topics. Students will discuss goal setting, job traits, personal strengths and skills, how mentors can help, and planning for success.
Speaking of mentors, our mentoring program has gotten off to a great start this year, too! We have several returning mentors as well as a few new folks who have signed up. This is a very rewarding program for both the student and the adult! It's never too late to sign up.
We appreciate all of the support demonstrated by the outstanding attendance at our open house. Thank you for coming. The future looks bright for the 2006-07 school year!
Please call if you have questions or concerns or would like more information.
