School aftercare spaces filling fast

Few spaces remain available, so parents and guardians are urged to reserve a place for their children by registering now for the Latchkey program. Forms may be picked up at the City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department. Many have enrolled already, and applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers the after-school childcare for children from kindergarten through fifth grade.

The Latchkey program for the 20062007 school year will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, at the H.G. Olsen Elementary School gym.

After school care will be provided from 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays when school is in session. The cost is $50 per month for the first child, $30 for

the second child, $20 for the third child and up. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify under the free/reduced lunch program.

"Latchkey's objective is to serve the needs of the working parents in Port Aransas by providing a safe and enriching after-school program for their children," said director Gary Mysorski.

Activities include time for play, snacks, homework and crafts.

Because the program begins midway through August, the cost this month will be pro-rated.

Complete forms and return them to the Parks and Recreation Department office, 739 W. Ave. A, along with the payment for August.
